European Team Squash Championships: France end England women's winning run


Alves (right) beat Lust 11-1 11-3 8-11 11-9 as France, having lost the last five successive finals to England, won the women’s title for the first time

England’s women were beaten in the European Team Squash Championships final for only the second time since the event began in 1978 as second seeds France sealed a 2-1 win in Birmingham.

Camille Serne beat Sarah-Jane Perry 3-1, Laura Massaro levelled the match for England but Melissa Alves won the decider 3-1 against Victoria Lust.

England retained the men’s title with a 3-1 win over third seeds Spain.

Scotland’s women lost their third-place play-off against Belgium 2-0.

Spain had edged out defending champions France on games countback in the men’s semi-finals and were looking to avenge a 4-0 defeat against England in the pool stages.

Spanish number one Borja Golan, who missed that pool match, beat Declan James in the opening match to give his team the lead, James unable to properly compete in the fifth game following an injury.

James Willstrop put England level with a 3-0 win over Iker Pajares and Daryl Selby saw off Bernat Jaume 3-2 which left England needing one game from the final match.

Tom Richards was always ahead against Edmon Lopez, and secured England’s 41st title as he took the required game 11-9.
