GB’s Anderson wins shock second European gold

Great Britain’s Freya Anderson has won her second freestyle gold at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Glasgow.

Anderson, 18, followed up her 100m title with gold in the 200m.

Compatriot Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, 24, won bronze in the 200m individual medley.

Anderson also added 50m freestyle relay silver to her medal haul, alongside team-mates Scott McLay, Duncan Scott and Anna Hopkin.

“It’s just amazing – I really didn’t expect it,” Anderson said after storming through the last 50m from sixth place to win in a new British record of one minute and 52.7 seconds.

“Even when I touched the wall and looked around I saw the one by my name I was like ‘what!?’. I’m really happy with how I managed to pace my race and come back hard on the last 50 metres.”

Fran Halsall held the previous record for 10 years.
