Barcelona missed the chance to go top of La Liga after slipping to a surprise 1-0 defeat at Getafe.
Jaime Mata scored the only goal from the penalty spot early in the second half and that was enough to lift Getafe up to second, level on points with leaders Real Madrid, who were beaten at home by Cadiz earlier on Saturday. Lionel Messi hit a post for Barça in the first half, but it was a frustrating evening for the Catalans and Getafe also hit the woodwork in the closing stages. Barça’s first defeat of the season under head coach, Ronald Koeman, leaves them ninth in the table, three points adrift of Madrid with a game in hand, with the first clásico on the season next Saturday. Nemanja Maksimovic forced Barcelona goalkeeper Neto into a save and Messi struck a post with a low curling effort. Antoine Griezmann blazed over the crossbar having been set free by teenager Pedri and Clément Lenglet failed to make contact with Messi’s excellent cross.
The pattern continued in the second half as Messi looked to orchestrate by falling deeper, but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock via Mata’s penalty in the 56th minute. Djené Dakonam was adjudged to have been fouled by Frenkie de Jong and Mata coolly converted into the bottom corner. Ansu Fati fired off target from outside the area as Barca chased an equaliser, but Getafe threatened again when Cucho Hernández burst clear and fired against the crossbar.
Real Madrid also suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 1-0 at home to Cádiz. The winning goal came in the first half from Anthony Lozano, whose chip over Thibaut Courtois had enough on it to get over the Real Madrid keeper and into the net. Madrid piled on the pressure in the second half but Cádiz held on gamely. The home side had a goal disallowed for offside with 10 minutes left when the substitute Luka Jovic got the ball in the net from close range after a knockdown from Karim Benzema.
Elsewhere in La Liga, Luis Suárez and Yannick Carrasco scored early and late in the game to help Atlético Madrid to a 2-0 victory at Celta Vigo. Suárez’s goal – his third in four games since switching from Barcelona – came in the sixth minute with a first-time finish inside the area after a sweeping move down the left.
Federico Chiesa was sent off on his Juventus debut and the Serie A champions also had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside by the tiniest of margins as they were held to a 1-1 draw at promoted Crotone. Crotone started well and Simy put them ahead after 12 minutes. The Nigerian sent 42-year-old Gianluigi Buffon, who became the first player to make 650 Serie A appearances, the wrong way from the penalty spot after a foul by Leonardo Bonucci on Arkadiusz Reca. Chiesa provided an assist for Juve’s equaliser nine minutes later as he ran on to Dejan Kulusevski’s through ball and laid it off for Morata to score from close range. But the winger, signed from Fiorentina during the recent transfer window, was given a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Luca Cigarini on the hour before Morata’s goal was chalked off after a three-minute delay because his heel was offside.
Napoli blasted four goals in a devastating 20-minute first-half spell as they thumped Atalanta 4-1 in Serie A on Saturday, handing the visitors a taste of their own medicine. Free-scoring Atalanta, last season’s top-scorers with 98 goals, had netted 13 goals in winning their first three games but had no answer to Napoli’s attacks in an extraordinary first half. The Mexican forward Hirving Lozano, out of favour with coach Gennaro Gattuso last season, set Napoli on their way with two goals in four minutes. Matteo Politano fired the third on the half hour and Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen took advantage of more poor defending to score the fourth before the interval. Romero set up Atalanta’s consolation for substitute Sam Lammers in the 69th minute.
Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller scored two goals each as the German champions crushed hosts Arminia Bielefeld 4-1 in the Bundesliga to move within a point of top spot. Müller scored either side of Lewandowski’s double, with the Polish striker taking his season’s tally to seven league goals from four games.
RB Leipzig muscled past Augsburg 2-0 to stay top of the Bundesliga after four matches while fellow title contenders Borussia Dortmund needed a second-half goal by substitute Marco Reus to beat hosts Hoffenheim 1-0. Goals from Angelino and Yussuf Poulsen gave Leipzig a two-goal cushion as they eased off a bit in the second half with their Champions League debut against Basaksehir looming on Tuesday. Leipzig move up to 10 points with Dortmund on nine.
Dortmund, with Reus and top scorer Erling Haaland starting on the bench, were nowhere near their best against Hoffenheim and had to wait until late in the first half for their first opportunities. Reus and Haaland were brought on in the 64th minute and instantly breathed life into their team’s attack. They combined perfectly for the Dortmund captain to tap in the winner 14 minutes from time, completing a successful dress rehearsal for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Lazio in Rome.
