Europa League squad of the season confirmed with Chelsea dominant


Chelsea players dominated the Europa League squad of the season after their triumph in the competition, while three Arsenal players were also selected.

Maurizio Sarri’s side beat Arsenal 4-1 in the final in Baku last week.

And Chelsea have eight of the 18 players chosen in the 2018-19 squad of the season, making it 11 in total from the London rivals chosen for their performances throughout the competition.

Europa League final goalscorers Olivier Giroud, Pedro and Eden Hazard are all selected, as is Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who played his part in the semi-final penalty shoot-out win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Defenders Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz also made it, as did two of Sarri’s first-choice midfield, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante.

 

Olivier Giroud was the Europa League’s top scorer

Giroud, who opened the scoring against his former club in Baku, finished as the competition’s outright top scorer with 11. Pedro weighed in with five goals and three assists, while Hazard scored twice what looks set to prove his farewell appearance in a Chelsea shirt before an expected move to Real Madrid .

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made the squad after scoring eight times in 12 outings in the Europa League, while Sead Kolasinac and Laurent Koscielny also got the nod.

Also named in the squad were Benfica wonderkid Joao Felix who is at the centre of a tug-of-war between Manchester City , Manchester United and Real Madrid, his team-mate Alex Grimaldo who has been linked with a move to Arsenal, and Luka Jovic, believed to be on Chelsea’s radar.
