AS a nation we love splashing out – but not on visits to the local swimming pool.
A survey by John West’s Get Shipshape campaign has found that one in seven adults doesn’t bother going swimming because they say it costs too much. But taking a dip doesn’t necessarily mean your budget will be a washout. Here’s how:

PASS TIME: A membership plan might be better value than the cost of individual visits and can kickstart your swim routine. Movegb.com lets you sign up for a £1-a-week Discovery membership at lots of fitness venues nationwide. Several offer swimming as part of the “try that venue once” trial. You can cancel the trial at any time.
TIME SAVER: See if your local pool has off-peak (i.e. reduced price) swimming times. Several councils also offer free swimming times for the over-sixties.
SWIMMING LESSONS: Better.org.uk offers more affordable swimming lessons for kids and adults. They can start at £3 (depending on location). Check its offers page which has £10 off a Swim School course in Oxfordshire, and there’s a “free swim when you return” voucher available in Newcastle. Check to see if there’s a centre and an offer near you.
POOL YOUR RESOURCES: Want something a bit more substantial than a paddling pool in your back garden? Then hotfoot it down to Lidl. This weekend it has slashed the price of its 12ft Steel Pro Swimming Pool to £89.99 — down 40 per cent from its RRP of £149.95, saving nearly £60. This above-the-ground pool is an absolute steal. But be quick, once they’re gone, they’re gone.
PADDLE POWER: If you simply want to cool off, a rectangular family paddling pool is £15 at Wilko, which is the cheapest I have seen — even a similar pool at Asda is £5 more.
