England star Raheem Sterling was on the receiving end of plenty of abuse from Montenegro fans throughout their comfortable European qualifier win.
The in-form Manchester City attacker had the last laugh as he slotted in England’s fifth goal in a second-half rout in Podgorica.
Sterling, who bagged a hat-trick against the Czech Republic on Friday, slotted home calmly after a precise Jordan Henderson pass.
And he couldn’t help but respond to the torrent of abuse he’d received from fans by cupping his ear to the home supporters.
They responded by appearing to throw an object at Sterling, which was picked up by Callum Hudson-Odoi and handed to the bench.
And fans loved Sterling’s response as he silenced his critics with another breathtaking performance.
One fan labelled Sterling a “lad” for his perfect response, with another adding he had “every right” to respond in such a way.
Others added that they “love that from Sterling” and that he was “silencing” the Montenegro fans in the ideal way.
Sterling’s stunning season has seen him touted as a potential candidate for the Premier League Player of the Season award.
England fans have been delighted to see him transfer his sensational form to international football, with four goals in the space of just a few days for Gareth Southgate’s side.
