End of the world: How Earth could plunge into 'deep freeze' in minutes – 'Stock up'

Neil deGrasse Tyson was speaking during his Amazon Prime show, where he gives his take on popular topics in science, tech and the meaning of life. The popular astrophysicist was asked what would happen in the hypothetical situation where the Sun was to disappear, something that is possible when it comes to the end of its current life cycle. However, Dr Tyson did not hold back, offering a shocking outlook for the Blue Planet.

He told viewers during his “Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains Everything” series they would have just minutes to prepare for an end of the world scenario.

He said in 2015: “You know, one of the fun questions in astronomy is asking what would happen if something impossible happened.

“If in this instant, the Sun just disappeared, what would happen?

“Well, we would not know anything about that fact for eight minutes and 20 seconds.

“We would still orbit the Sun, we would still feel its light because the Sun is eight minutes and 20 light seconds away from us.

“So the moment you remove the Sun, there’s the light still coming our way.”

However, after those few minutes of ignorant bliss, things would turn bad pretty quickly, according to Dr Tyson.

He added: “And then eight minutes and 20 seconds later, we plunge into depths of cold and we have nothing to orbit any more and we fly off at a tangent into interplanetary space.

“Life on the surface would die pretty quickly.

“There’s no photosynthesis, which is the base of the food chain.

“So animals that eat plants, they will die, animals that eat animals eventually die.

“Maybe microbes at the bottom of the ocean would do just fine, because they thrive on geochemical energy, rather than solar energy.”

Dr Tyson also revealed how life as we know it would be rendered extinct pretty quickly.

He continued: “But we’re not microbes, so kiss your a**e goodbye if that happened.

“Depending on how much canned food you have stocked, and how many blankets you’ve kept, we will live as long as food supplies are sustained.

“It’s a slow exhaustion of the total amount of food available to us all.

“How much rice has already been grown and is in the silos, or wheat, whatever.

“Eventually the last person on Earth will die.”

During the same series, Dr Tyson also offered a damning prospect for life on Earth should we ever face a black hole ever approach.

He said in 2008: “The point comes where you snap into two – likely to happen at the base of your spine – now you are two pieces.

“It turns out you will survive that snap because below your waist, while there are important organs, there are no vital organs.

“So your torso will stay alive for a little while, until you bleed to death, but it all happens much faster.

The two pieces then feel tidal forces and they snap into two pieces and they snap again into eight and then 16.

“Eventually it’s your head and multiple other parts.”
