Emmys viewers fume as The Bear sweeps comedy awards while 'robbed' star loses out


Another expressed: “I was so sure Ayo Edebiri would go home with her second Emmy Award I feel very humbled.”

Viewers also noted the inconsistency in awards distribution among the cast, with one commenting: “How did every single cast member from The Bear (that was nominated) EXCEPT Ayo win… that’s crazy.”

Eugene Levy addressed the controversy during his opening monologue, humorously acknowledging the debate over the show’s genre by stating” “I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy…but in the true spirit of The Bear we will not be making any jokes.”

Jeremy Allen White took home the award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series at this week’s awards, while Liza Colon-Zayas won her first Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, delivering an emotional acceptance speech.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach also secured an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

The ceremony took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, September 15. It was a historic moment as Eugene and Dan Levy became the first father-son duo to host the show.

FX network dominated the nominations with their hit samurai show Shogun receiving a total of 25 nominations. The Bear followed closely with 23 nominations.

The second season of The Bear broke the Emmy record previously held by NBC’s 30 Rock since 2009 with 22 nominations.

The show received nominations for lead comedy actor (Jeremy Allen White), lead comedy actress (Ayo Edebiri), supporting comedy actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Lionel Boyce), supporting comedy actress (Liza Colon-Zayas), directing (Storer for Fishes and Ramy Youssef for Honeydew TK) and writing (Fishes by Joanna Calo and Storer).

The Bear was a big winner at the 2023 Emmy Awards, taking home eight awards including best supporting actress in a comedy for Ayo, best actor in a comedy for Jeremy, best comedy series, and more.
