Emmy Awards 2021: All the winners on TV's big night

Jason Sudeikis’ heartwarming comedy series Ted Lasso scored on goal at Sunday’s Emmys ceremony when it won the prestigious award for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Sudeikis took home one of the top acting honors for Lead Actor in a Comedy for playing the title character, when his costars Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein also won both supporting actor prizes for the comedy.

The 2021 ceremony was taking place at L.A. Live’s Event Deck in Downtown Los Angeles. The space offers indoor and outdoor locations, but the main ceremony was held indoors.

While attendees were all required to be fully vaccinated and have a negative Covid-19 test to attend, none of the attendees appeared to be wearing masks throughout the ceremony.

Jason opened with a sweet speech as he accepted his acting award.

‘I would say that this show is about family, this show is about mentors and teachers, this show is about teammates. And I wouldn’t be here without those three, you know things in my life.’

The comedian included a sweet callout for his son Otis, seven, and his daughter Daisy, four, whom he shares with his former partner Olivia Wilde.

The sweet speech was in keeping with the manner of his heartwarming character Ted Lasso, though he got a bit raunchier when he offered thanks for his old SNL boss Lorne Michael, whom he joked ‘went to take a dump now.’

Sudeikis plays the title character on Ted Lasso, an American football coach who’s enlisted to lead an English soccer team despite having no experience with the sport.

Before presenting his award, Legally Blonde star Jennifer Coolidge jokingly handled the Emmy as if she had won, though she can’t be nominated for her series The White Lotus until next year.

Hannah shouted with joy after winning her big award.

‘Jason, you’ve changed my life with this,’ she gushed for her Sudeikis.

She plays the owner of an English soccer team who hires Ted Lasso after wining control of the team in a divorce.

Among the nominees was her costar Juno Temple.

Immediately after Hannah’s big win, Ted Lasso fans scored another goal when comedian and actor Brett Goldstein was announced the winner of the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series trophy.

He dropped the gruff voice he uses for the show for some kind words about his costars.

‘This cast made me sick they’re so good,’ he gushed.

Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence accepted the award for Outstanding comedy with the cast and creative team surrounding him.

Amid a rush of thanks, he added one for ‘T-dog,’ which he said was his ‘new nickname for [Apple CEO] Tim Cook.’

‘He does not know that yet,’ he joked.

The writers of HBO’s news–comedy program Last Week Tonight With John Oliver were the big winners of the Writing for a Variety Series honor.

They joked that only the ‘hottest’ of the many writers on the show were allowed to go to the ceremony.

Oliver himself took to the stage to accept the Variety Talk Series award for his newsy program, while Lorne Michaels led a bevy of the staff from the long-running late night institution Saturday Night Live, which won the award for Variety Sketch Series.

He singled out some of the guest performers who played political roles this past season, including Jim Carrey as then-presidential candidate Joe Biden and Maya Rudolph as future-Vice President Kamala Harris.

Lucia Aniello was the second female director to win, this time for directing Hacks. During her ecstatic speech, she revealed that she had married her collaborator Downs.

‘To Paul — I’m in love with you, which is why I married you last weekend,’ she said.

The first lead award of the evening was for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, which went to veteran star Jean Smart.

Her touching speech included a tribute to her late husband Richard Gilliland, who died earlier this year.

‘I would not be here without him, and without his kind of putting his career on the back burner so I could take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that I have had,’ she said.

Host Cedric the Entertainer, 57, opened the show with a tribute to the late Biz Markie with a parody of his signature song Just A Friend.

During a press conference in LA earlier this week, the host promised to make the show more ‘fun’ and less ‘stuffy.’

The Television Academy has announced that the September 19 ceremony will once again be slightly different this year, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 73rd annual awards show that celebrates the best of television will have a ‘limited’ number of guests (about 500) and nominees on the red carpet as well as event staff.

And attendees have to show proof of vaccination and a negative test result.
