‘Unfortunately, pregnancy for her has been brutal this time round. She’s been ill from the get go and is still is sick now.’

The father-of-two also admitted that although he hopes to have a daughter this time, he believes it is unlikely as there is ‘a long line of boys in my family’.

He said: ‘We’d love a girl, but you know the old cliche, we just hope for a healthy baby.

‘We have a long line of boys in my family, so it’s not looking likely, but who knows!’

Matthew, who stars as David Metcalfe in the ITV soap, also discussed his recent Emmerdale storyline, in which teacher Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein) was grooming his teenage son Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant).

He said: ‘It’s hard and really difficult to do. Some people couldn’t even watch it, and that’s the type of reaction we wanted. We didn’t want it to be a fantasy.

‘A lot of people don’t think it’s abuse and grooming, but when you spin it on its head with an old guy and young girl, it would cause an uproar.’

The actor went on to reveal Emmerdale worked closely with children’s charity Barnardo’s for the episodes, and even spoke with sexual abuse survivors on set.

Matthew added: ‘We worked closely with Barnardo’s. They brought four incredible young men [sexual abuse survivors] on set, and they turned what happened to them in the past to speak at schools about their [recovery].

‘It’s made me so aware with my own nine-year-old. There’s games now where you can have an open chat with others, and we make sure that he can come to us when there’s someone on a game that he doesn’t know. I hope I’m aware of seeing the signs now.’

Matthew and Charley announced they were expecting their third child with a sweet Instagram post in February.
