Emmerdale, EastEnders and Hollyoaks off air after coronavirus cancels filming

Thursday night’s usual soap lineup was missing from TV screens tonight.

Emmerdale, EastEnders and Hollyoaks were all pulled from the schedules for the first time since the country went into lockdown over the coronavirus pandemic.

Bosses at some of the biggest programmes in the UK are bidding to keep episodes on the air for as long as possible over the coming months amid the health crisis.

Filming has stopped on all of the series already, and channel chiefs at BBC and ITV announced last week they were planning to reduce the number of soaps being screened every week as a result.

EastEnders normally airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with 30 minute episodes each night.

Meanwhile Emmerdale airs every day of the week, with an extra episode at 8pm on a Thursday.

Corrie airs Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, with two episodes at 7.30pm and 8.30pm, while Hollyoaks airs everyday at 6.30pm on Channel 4.

There is no indication of when the UK lockdown will be lifted so it is unclear when Thursday night soaps will return to normal.

EastEnders’ show runner Jon Sen posted the news on Twitter, saying: “Just to let you know that after the news last week that we are postponing filming, we are all still working hard behind the scenes planning stories for when we return.”

After the British government put restrictions in place to halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus, a statement confirmed that “after much consideration, it has been decided that filming on EastEnders will be postponed until further notice.”

EastEnders will now broadcast twice a week on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Coronation Street and Emmerdale will air just three times per week each – going out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7pm.

And on Channel 4, Hollyoaks will broadcast Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4 and a first look episode following at 7pm on E4.
