Emma Thompson has revealed how her husband Greg Wise actually thought fellow Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet was his future wife before they got together.

Things could have been very, very different.

Late Night star Emma has been married to actor Greg since 2003 after meeting in 1995 on the set of Sense and Sensibility, which Kate also starred in.

You can see where this is going, can’t you?

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, Emma said: ‘Before he did the job, he went to see a friend of his who was a bit witchy and she said he would meet his future partner on the film [Sense and Sensibility].

‘He assumed it wasn’t me because I was married and quite a lot older than him so he thought it might be Kate.’

So, Greg took Kate on a date – to Glastonbury Music Festival, of all places.

‘She was so bored,’ explained Emma. ‘And he thought, “This isn’t going to work, who can it be?”

‘Then things happened that probably shouldn’t have happened, and it’s been 25 years in May.’

We love a happy ending.

Emma was previously married to actor Kenneth Branagh, after tying the knot in 1989. However, they later announced their separation in 1995.

Kate, meanwhile, was married to Jim Threapleton from 1998 to 2001 and Sam Mendes from 2003 to 2011, before marrying her current husband Edward Abel Smith in 2012.

Emma, who also wrote the Jane Austen adaptation, won the 1996 best adapted screenplay Oscar for her work.

Joining Emma on Graham’s sofa are actors Robert Downey, Jr. and Hugh Laurie plus Monty Python star Terry Gilliam.

The Graham Norton Show is on BBC1 tonight at 10.35pm.
