Emery praises Ozil’s ‘quality and spirit’ vs Liverpool and reveals Arsenal outcast could face Wolves this weekend

ARSENAL boss Unai Emery has praised Mesut Ozil’s dazzling display against Liverpool during the Gunners’ Carabao Cup defeat at Anfield.

The 31-year-old was instrumental in the visitors’ second, third and fourth goals with his assist for Ainsley Maitland-Niles nothing short of sensational.

But he was hauled off for Matteo Guendouzi halfway through the second half despite being the best player on the pitch.

However Emery has stated that the substitution was always planned with the World Cup winner playing in just his third game of the season.

Taking off Ozil proved to be a huge mistake as Liverpool battled back to force the game to spot-kicks after Divock Origi netted a 94th minute equaliser.

But the ex-Paris Saint-Germain gaffer did reveal that Ozil could feature against Wolves on Saturday at the Emirates.

Speaking after the clash, Emery said: “A crazy match. I am very proud of their work, we had a high rhythm in the first 45 minutes.

“At the end we were winning until the last action. Penalties are 50/50 and we lost.

“We are sad but our work, we deserve to have more. There are lots of positives to take.

“Defensively, both teams cannot be happy with that. But for the supporters it was an amazing 90 minutes. The result was always changing. It was spectacular.

“We can be proud of our work but not the result. Mesut Ozil is back helping us with his quality and his spirit. He played with good spirit, quality.

“It was in the plan to replace him, we had spoken about that before.”

Speaking of whether the midfielder could be involved on the weekend, he said: “Yes because we play on Saturday and in my mind Ozil is a possibility to use.”
