Elton John and his hand-picked musical guests have curated a special Christmas playlist for Apple Music’s Beats 1, revealing their favourite festive tunes.

The legendary musician has got his own Rocket Hour on the channel, airing on Saturday 14 December, and he invited his pals to pick out their tracks of choice, too.

One of Elton’s choices is The Pet Shop Boys’ track, It Doesn’t Often Snow At Christmas, of which he said: ‘This reminds me, it’s so typically English kind of crispy record but very camp and fabulous, I love this one, it’s one of my favourite Christmas records.’

Elton invited some of his favourite new artists of 2019 onto the show, including Sam Fender who picked The Pogues: ‘My favourite Christmas song would have to be Fairytale of New York, what else is it going to be man?’

Ray Blk went for Destiny’s Child’s 8 Days Of Christmas, saying: ‘My favourite Christmas song has to be 8 Days of Christmas by Destiny’s Child. That one, it’s just an absolute banger to be honest.

‘It’s a R&B version of a classic, and I’m a R&B girl, I make R&B music, and I just remember at Christmas my Mum always playing Gospel music and for me I would always try and find the Hip Hop or R&B versions of those songs, so yeah, my Christmas favourite has to be 8 Days of Christmas by the amazing Destiny’s Child.’

Marika Hackman chose Christmas Wrapping by The Waitress, Rosie Lowe picked Joni Mitchell’s River, saying: ‘I think that this is the most beautiful Christmas song in the World, for me. I fell in love with her album Blue when I was 11 and it’s the first song that I learnt on piano off by heart.

‘I spent hours and hour and days working it out by ears and getting it under my fingers and I just love how she took Jingle Bells in major and turned it to minor with the most beautiful and rich harmony. And although the songs really sad, I feel there is a sense of freedom in there. I’m a huge Joni Mitchell fan and I hope that you love the song as much as I do.’

The full show will be live on Beats 1 at 5pm on Saturday 14th December. Listen live or on demand here.
