Ellis Marsalis dead: Jazz pianist dies at 85 after ‘coronavirus symptoms’


Ellis Marsalis, 85, who was a proclaimed jazz pianist in New Orleans has passed away after he was admitted to hospital with symptoms of coronavirus, according to several reports. Ellis recorded 20 solo albums and mentored his sons, Wynton and Branford Marsalis.

The jazz star is “suspected” to have died at the age of 85 from coronavirus, after he was admitted to hospital with symptoms of the virus, according to The Guardian.

The musician’s test results are still pending.

Express.co.uk has contacted a representative on behalf of Ellis Marsalis for comment.

Ellis lived in New Orleans, and mayor, LaToya Cantrell said the pianist was “a legend, the prototype of what we mean when we talk about New Orleans jazz”.
