Ellie Goulding shares emotional mental health awareness message and opens up about grandfather’s suicide

Ellie Goulding detailed her experiences with anxiety and imposter syndrome in an emotional message, in which she opened up about her grandfather’s suicide.

The singer, 32, revealed that she was thinking about her grandfather and said that she wished she and her family had known “how unhappy he was.”

Posting in acknowledgement of World Mental Health Day, which fell on October 10, the star said that she felt “relieved” that more of her fellow musicians are speaking out about the “complexity” of balancing touring with “going straight back to normality on a regular basis.”

“I know I chose this job but nothing could have prepared me for the ups and downs that come with it,” she said.

“I know for sure that a lot of my anxiety has come from what they call ‘imposter syndrome’ not believing in myself enough and thinking that I don’t deserve happiness which sometimes results in sabotaging your own success.”

Goulding said that she manages her anxiety by exercising every day, adding that “the feeling of blood pumping through [her] veins” helps remind her “how cool it is to be alive.”

She went on to reveal that her grandfather had taken his own life “a few years back,” writing: “I wish I had spoken to him more, and wish we could have even had the smallest clue of how unhappy he was.”

She concluded her heartfelt post by sharing her admiration for “those who get out of bed every morning and seize the day, even when they’re not feeling too great,” reminding readers: “You are doing amazingly and I’m proud of you.”

The star previously revealed that she has suffered with panic attacks, which could be “triggered by anything,” and has spoken of using cognitive behavioural therapy to manage her anxiety.
