Ella Eyre opens up about ex boyfriend who ‘struggled’ with her having more money

Elle Eyre has recalled a relationship with an ex who was uncomfortable with her earning more money than him.

The singer doesn’t feel money should be important in a relationship, however some of her former boyfriends didn’t feel the same way.

She didn’t bring the issue up while in the relationship, but with hindsight realises that it may be have been a factor in things falling apart.

She told Metro.co.uk: ‘Everyone has money worries and unfortunately they do come into dating. When you date someone you do take on their money worries as well.

‘In my experience money has never been important but being generous and sharing with the person you’re with is important. You might not be able to share in a financial way but as long as you’re sharing in a physical and emotional way and giving to that relationship in that way, it’s totally possible.

‘The difficulty is, I think we’ve all become accustomed to the man being the breadwinner and I think some men really struggle with that dynamic in a relationship. And my experience from a few of my previous boyfriends is that they’re not okay with that, and that makes the dynamic in a relationship really hard.’

Asked how she addressed the situation at the time, Ella explained: ‘I’m not very good at addressing things so I just didn’t address it, and then later down the line I realised that was causing a lot of issues. Paying the bill and stuff like that.

‘I have no issues with paying the bill, I want whatever I’m enjoying, and to enjoy the person I’m with. But sometimes it doesn’t work that way for the other person.’

Luckily there are no problems on that front with her current long term boyfriend, as the musician joked: ‘I’ve been with him for four years so he better f*****g be okay with it!’

Whether money factors into a relationship is the subject of new Badoo series The Truth Flirts, hosted by Ella.

It also covers how lockdown has had an effect on dating, sexuality and gender identity and cross-cultural dating.

Touching on the latter, the If I Go singer – who is half Jamaican – revealed she has not had issues in her love life on that front, but did have difficulty accepting her natural hair when she was younger.

She credits the resurgence of Black Lives Matter over the past few months with helping her recognise racially charged experiences when she was growing up.

‘It’s only now that Black Lives Matter has had a resurgence that I was able to recognise that I was affected by a few things at school. Like my hair, everyone has a hair journey, it took me a really long time to accept my natural hair and to enjoy it and make the most of it as opposed to hide it,’ Ella told us.

‘I remember vividly the guy I fancied at school calling me “bushy” and that was my nickname. I came into school the next day with slicked back hair.

‘It did give me a complex about my hair. And I would not have recognised that experience had Black Lives Matter not had its moment in lockdown.’

Speaking of lockdown, Ella saw the period of several months at home (‘guilt-free time off’) as time to focus on her next life moves – figuratively and literally.

She said: ‘Lockdown was the break I never knew I needed and probably wouldn’t take myself.

‘It gave me the time to re-evaluate my life, my location, pet ownership! I put my house on the market, I bought a puppy, and we’re moving.’

The first episode of The Truth Flirts season 2 is available now on Badoo UK’s YouTube page.
