She’s an Emmy award-winning actress with a stellar resume of acting credits.

But Elisabeth Moss was defending her love life when rumors began circulating more than one year ago that she was in a romance with Tom Cruise.

The 37-year-old star sat down to chat with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live when a caller dialed in to ask about her status with the famous Scientologist.

Elisabeth was in great spirits while making an appearance on the Bravo show with her Invisible Man co-star, Aldis Hodge.

‘What was your reaction when you read those gossip stories that you were getting married to Tom Cruise,’ one fan asked the Mad Men star.

Elisabeth hesitated before responding that the entire engagement ordeal was over before it even happened.

‘I actually was confused and also mainly got texts from people being like, “I didn’t know, why didn’t you tell me?,'” she told Andy. ‘And just confusion from my friends, but mainly poking fun at it ’cause obviously they knew it wasn’t true.’

The rumor even further escalated when it appeared on the cover of a magazine in February 2019.

‘And then I saw it on the cover of one of the gossip magazines, and I was like, “I’ve never had that haircut,”‘ she said. ‘Like, it was supposed to be a picture of the two of us and I was like, “I’ve never styled my hair like that.”‘

The unlikely duo may have been formed in part to her Scientologist background, a group which Tom is also notably a part of.

During an interview in April 2019, Elisabeth addressed her role on The Handmaid’s Tale and how it affected her religious beliefs.

‘It’s funny, there’s two things you’re never supposed to talk about at a dinner—politics or religion—and of course I’m doing The Handmaid’s Tale, which is politics and religion, so it’s a strange situation where you’re going to be asked about these topics,’ she told the Daily Beast. ‘I choose to express myself in my work and my art. I don’t choose to express myself about it in interviews. I don’t choose to talk about not just religion, but my personal life—who I’m dating and that kind of thing.

‘So for me, it’s so hard to unpack in a sound bite or an interview, but I will say that the things that I truly believe in are the things that I’ve mentioned, and I think that they’re very important.’

She also added: ‘I think people should be allowed to talk about what they want to talk about and believe what they want to believe and you can’t take that away—and when you start to take that away, when you start to say “you can’t think that,” “you can’t believe that,” “you can’t say that,” then you get into trouble. Then you get into Gilead. So whatever happens, I’m never going to take away your right to talk about something or believe something, and you can’t take away mine.’

When asked by an Instagram user if her Hulu series made her ‘think twice about Scientology’ due to ‘Gilead and Scientology both believe that all outside sources (aka news) are wrong or evil,’ Moss was quick to defend her religion.

‘That’s actually not true at all about Scientology,’ she said. ‘Religious freedom and tolerance and understanding the truth and equal rights for every race, religion and creed are extremely important to me. The most important things to me probably. And so Gilead and THT hit me on a very personal level. Thanks for the interesting question!’
