Elf has been named the most overrated Christmas film of all time, beating The Holiday, Love Actually and Miracle On 34th Street to the title.
Well, look who is a cotton-headed ninny muggins now…
Will Ferrell’s Buddy the Elf dropped onto the big screen in 2003, and has been a staple of the festive period ever since.
However, fans aren’t actually that keen on the flick, which topped the list of most overrated moves as voted for by Metro.co.uk readers.
Seriously savage.
What are the most overrated Christmas flicks?
The Santa Clause / Jingle All The Way / Last Christmas / Deck The Halls – 1%
Fans are clearly into films focusing on Santa Clause, wild Christmas feuds over decorations, rushing to buy a last minute present and George Michael songs.
So if bosses could just mix this into one movie, we spy a box office hit in the making…
Shrek The Halls / Home Alone 2 – 2%
Shrek has become a favourite at the festive period, with the iconic green ogre popping up at least once on the TV guide. So of course a Christmas outing – Shrek The Halls – has given us all we’ve ever needed.
The franchise special, and the Home Alone sequel, both got a solid 2% of the vote, meaning we’ll hopefully be seeing them on screens for the foreseeable future.
Miracle On 34th Street / A Christmas Prince / The Grinch / The Muppet Christmas Carol – 3%
The Grinch trying to steal Christmas might not scream festive cheer but there’s no way we would have the holidays without that meanie.
Unfortunately Grincho might have to share the festivities with The Muppets, Prince Richard and co, and actual Father Christmas this year…
The Nightmare Before Christmas / Bad Santa – 4%
It looks like some of the most underrated films in the list are the ones that don’t focus on festive moments.
In comes The Night Before Christmas and Bad Santa, who jointly notched up a very respectable 4%. Total classics.
The Holiday / Nativity / Christmas With The Kranks – 5%
Christmas With The Kranks and The Holiday both focus on unpredictable festive plans – house swaps and running for a Christmas cruise. While Nativity does what it says on the tin, following the stars of a school play that hits us all in the feels.
They jointly obtained 5% of the total, meaning we’ll be streaming them during the holidays.
It’s A Wonderful Life – 6%
It’s A Wonderful Life has rolled right into fifth place on the poll, with George Bailey nabbing 6% of the total. The black-and-white classic, which was released in 1946, shows George about to end his life, before he is shown what the world will have looked like without his impact.
It’s heartwarming and festive if you embrace it all.
Die Hard – 7%
There is an intense debate on whether or not Die Hard is actually a Christmas film, and it erupts every single time we open the first door on our advent calendar like clockwork.
It looks like cinephiles might be over the debate, as well as John McClane’s antics, as Bruce Willis’ first film in the action franchise racked up 7% of the vote. Yippee-Ki-Nay, huns.
Home Alone – 8%
Home Alone regularly tops the list of best Christmas films ever made, with Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) taking on burglars Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) when they try and get into his house.
This year marks the 30th anniversary, but fans have voted the flick into third place, meaning Kevin might need to take a break…
Love Actually – 16%
Love Actually is definitely one of the most talked about films on the list, with think pieces popping up every single Christmas to discuss the best and worst moments.
Yes, we’re still demanding justice for Emma Thompson, as are 16% of you who voted the film into second place on the poll.
Elf – 20%
Coming in with a fifth of the total vote – and beating 19 other films to the crown – was Buddy the Elf.
Unfortunately we do not sit on a throne of lies, people just aren’t that keen on Will Ferrell emerging from a grate in New York and causing chaos in the Big Apple.
