Election – Net migration would triple to 800k a year under Labour’s open border policies, Priti Patel warns

NET migration would skyrocket to three times the current level under Labour’s open borders policy, according to alarming Tory figures.

Priti Patel has warned voters that “immigration would surge” under Labour because Jeremy Corbyn has “no credible plan”.

OPEN BORDERS

The Tories claim if Labour goes ahead to extend freedom of movement to the rest of the world then it would see annual net migration soaring to 840,000 a year over the next decade.

That would add a population the size of Manchester and Newcastle to the UK every year over the next decade.

However, the party will decide its policy at its ‘Clause V’ manifesto meeting on Saturday.

Home Secretary Ms Patel said: “Jeremy Corbyn has no credible plan for how to deal with the consequences of his open borders policy.

“The biggest risk to our NHS is Corbyn’s plans for uncontrolled and unlimited immigration, forever.

“We will reduce immigration overall while being more open and flexible to the highly skilled people we need, such as scientists and doctors.

“This can only happen if people vote for a Conservative majority government so we can leave the EU with a deal.”

Under the Tories immigrants will be allowed into the UK under an Australian points-based system – with freedom of movement completely abolished.

Ms Patel told her party’s conference last month that this would allow Britain to “take back control”.

While VISAs for nurses will be halved in cost and fast-tracked to attract much-needed staff to our ailing NHS.

UNION WARNING

Union chief and Labour paymaster Len McClusky has warned Mr Corbyn he must ditch the open borders policy if he has any chance of winning the election.

The Unite boss said it was not a “sensible approach”.

He told the Guardian: “It’s wrong in my view to have any greater free movement of labour unless you get stricter labour market regulation.”

But Mr Corbyn hit back, defending EU freedom of movement, insisting it was needed to plug job shortages in the NHS and other industries.

And in a sign of the bitter civil war over the issue, Shadow Health Secretary Jon Ashworth said freedom of movement should continue because the “NHS has always relied on international migration”.

The Tory analysis of the impact on population growth if freedom of movement is to continue after Brexit said net migration from the EU would continue to grow by current levels of around 260,000 per year – equivalent to the size of Brighton.

But it is extending free movement to the rest of the world that would make the biggest impact to UK population growth, the analysis found.

The Tories said it had used government figures and methodology to calculate that based on current trends, extending freedom of movement to all migrants would increase total net incomers to the UK to 840,000 – treble the current level.

The party insisted its analysis was “deliberately cautious” and based on the lowest assumption of migration flows.
