Elder Scrolls 6 as Xbox exclusive is ‘hard to imagine’ says Bethesda

Todd Howard has suggested Elder Scrolls 6 will be released on PS5, as well as Xbox Series X, but there’s still no hint of a release date.

Microsoft buying Bethesda was a huge shock, especially given how much they paid for them, but the most important question for most gamers is whether Bethesda games such as Fallout and Elder Scrolls will now become Xbox exclusives.

Previously, Microsoft has been non-committal on the subject, saying that decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis.

Some have taken this to mean that existing franchises will remain multiformat but new ones, such as the forthcoming Starfield, will become exclusive.

‘I would agree that is hard to imagine’, said Howard when asked whether he thought Elder Scrolls 6 would become an exclusive by GamesIndustry.biz, although he said no more than that.

On the face of it this seems to be good news for PlayStation owners, although the statement does depend on how vivid you think Todd Howard’s imagination is.

But given he thought releasing Fallout 76 in the state it was at launch would turn out well, he doesn’t seem to be too lacking in that department.

Elsewhere in the same interview he repeats the Microsoft line about judging games on a case-by-case basis, pointing out that Bethesda had plenty of exclusive deals even when they were independent.

‘This is an outside perspective, but if you go back 10 years at Microsoft, you wouldn’t expect them to have a full Office suite on an iPhone either’, he said.

‘I can’t really project where things will be except to say we’ve done those sort of exercises ourselves as an independent. If you look at every Elder Scrolls game, there has been some exclusivity on Xbox or with Microsoft. We’ve partnered with every game. Morrowind was basically a console exclusive, Oblivion was a long timed exclusive, Skyrim’s DLC was exclusive for a long period of time.

‘We’ll decide what makes the best sense for our audience when the time comes, and I can’t really project today what that looks like.’

For now though the point is largely moot as Elder Scrolls 6 is not expected to be released for several years yet. Even Starfield lacks a release date, although there has been some speculation it might be released next year.
