EGG sales have soared to a 30-year high — smashing the 6.5billion barrier.
Around 260million more were bought in the year to June compared with the same period in 2017/18.
The four per cent rise comes three years after the Food Standards Agency ruled that eggs are safe — runny or hard — for everyone.
Before that, contradictory advice meant some people, including pregnant women and young tots, were told not to eat them. There were also a number of salmonella scares.
Now the British Lion Quality mark is stamped on shells to show they have been produced to some of the highest food safety standards in the world.
Most eggs are used in the food manufacturing industry.
Andrew Joret, of the British Egg Industry Council, told trade journal The Grocer: “The latest figures make great reading for retailers.
“But they are no surprise, as eggs offer a completely unique, natural meal solution that is healthy, versatile, easy to cook and cost-effective.
“They are the perfect choice to fuel busy, modern lifestyles, suiting demand for healthier options.”
