EFL make announcement on Bolton and Bury opening matches of the season

League One newcomers Bolton Wanderers and Bury have discovered their fates after the EFL reached a verdict regarding their respective financial situations.

Bury, who earned promotion from League Two , were due to host fellow newly-promoted side Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday but the fixture has been suspended.

The Shakers were given until 17.00 today to provide the EFL with evidence of their ‘financial viability’ but failed to meet the deadline, forcing the EFL to suspend the game ‘reluctantly’.

As for Bolton, who were relegated from the Championship , they will be allowed to kick-off their season with a visit to W ycombe Wanderers the same day.

Bolton have been granted permission to begin their season as planned on Saturday

According to BBC Sport , the evidence provided by Bolton satisfied the EFL that the club can meet the league’s requirements as they await the completion of their takeover.

After being deducted 12 points, both sides were granted additional time to provide evidence that progress was being made behind closed doors at both clubs.

A decision regarding Bury’s second match of the season away to Accrington Stanley is still to be made, the club will now be referred to an independent disciplinary panel for further investigation.

Following the decision revealed this evening, the EFL have released the following statement regarding the action that has been taken against Bury.

It reads: “Following continued and comprehensive discussions, the EFL board is not satisfied it has received the necessary evidence in regard to the outstanding information it requires that demonstrates how Bury will be funded moving forwards.

“As a result of not meeting Monday’s 17.00 deadline, which had been extended on two previous occasions, the board feels it has been placed in an unenviable position and, regrettably, has opted to take the reluctant decision to suspend Saturday’s opening day fixture with MK Dons under the provision of EFL regulation 28.2.

“In addition, the EFL board, if not in possession of the necessary evidence by 12.00 on Friday 2nd August, will make a determination as to whether to suspend Bury’s away fixture at Accrington Stanley.”
