Edwin van der Sar has told compatriot Donny van de Beek to stick it out at Manchester United and says he has the full confidence of the Old Trafford staff.

Van der Sar, the former United goalkeeper who is currently the chief executive at Ajax, has spoken to insiders at the club who have told him he is training well and has the backing of those who matter in Manchester.

Van de Beek left Ajax for Old Trafford in a £40million deal this summer and he has struggled to force his way into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The Dutch international has started just twice in the Premier League this season and hasn’t even featured off the bench in the competition in the past month.

He has largely been restricted to cup football during his time in Manchester and has only found the back of the net once in the 21 appearances he’s made.

Still, Van der Sar is not concerned about his future.

After conversations with those at his former club, he has no doubt that Van de Beek will come good and remains highly regarded at Manchester United.

The Ajax CEO insists there is ‘no shame at all’ in struggling to break into a United side that boasts the likes of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay among their midfield options.

And he thinks Van de Beek shouldn’t be seeking an exit and will ‘get there’ at Old Trafford.

‘I do talk to more people at the club… Fantastic attitude, he is doing well in training,’ Van der Sar told Ziggo Sport.

“It’s hard. Pogba is coming back, Fernandes is very important, Matic and McTominay, who are there.

‘There’s no shame at all, it’s a big club too, isn’t it? Of course it is a large amount (the transfer fee), but they are confident that he will get there.’
