Eden Hazard has revealed he decided to leave Chelsea a year before securing a dream transfer move to Real Madrid.

Belgium superstar Hazard enjoyed seven successful years at Stamford Bridge, scoring over 100 goals for Chelsea and helping the club win two Premier League titles, two Europa Leagues, the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Despite establishing himself as a hero in west London, Hazard made no secret of his desire to one day play for Real Madrid, the club he had supported as a child.

The 28-year-old finally got his wish in the summer, with Chelsea agreeing a deal with Real Madrid worth over £100million, but says he had made his mind up about a move 12 months earlier.

Speaking to Real Madrid TV, Hazard said: ‘I’d already made my mind up after the World Cup and I said to myself: “I have to join Real Madrid now”.

‘That wasn’t possible and I spent another year at Chelsea and that made my departure easier. The club understood it and allowed me to leave.

‘My dream was always to play for Real Madrid, the greatest team in the world, and so far I’m happy.’

Hazard also revealed he spoke with former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric before arriving at the Bernabeu.

‘Courtois always told me that this was the best club,’ Hazard added.

‘I also spoke to Modric and got the impression that they all wanted to see me at Real Madrid and it finally happened.’

Despite Hazard leaving the club, Chelsea have enjoyed a fine start to the season, winning six of their ten league fixtures to sit fourth in the Premier League.

Hazard, meanwhile, has endured a mixed start to his Real Madrid career, scoring just once in his nine appearances for the Spanish giants.
