Ed Woodward failed to deliver on four key transfer requests from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January, reports say.

Manchester United signed Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo during the winter window, but Solskjaer was pushing for a far busier month.

Ighalo was brought in on a six-month loan deal as a short-term fix to United’s lack of options up front, while Fernandes was a big-money addition from Sporting Lisbon.

The Daily Star claim Solskjaer outlined the four players he wanted to sign, but Woodward managed to get just two deals over the line.

The signing of Ighalo shocked the football world, while United struggled to agree terms with Sporting Lisbon for much of the month.

Solskjaer has called for patience from United fans, insisting a rebuilding process has barely started, but the failure of Woodward to deliver on his targets does not bode well for the Norwegian.

United want Solskjaer to deliver European football in some form this season, but the Red Devils are currently ninth in the Premier League table.

Mauricio Pochettino is once again being talked up as a potential replacement for Solskjaer, who could be axed if United fail to qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League.

United have been linked with a host of names in the summer including the likes of Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho and James Maddison.

Woodward has promised to deliver further signings in the summer amid building opposition to his and Solskjaer’s reign at the club.

He said: ‘Significant work has already been done – and investments made – to strengthen the Academy and we’re pleased with the progress being made behind the scenes to ensure we have the right players, the right infrastructure, and the right culture to sustain long-term success.

‘Similarly, there has been extensive work on our recruitment process, with considerable investment in scouting, data and analytics.

‘The Recruitment Department is working to a clear plan and philosophy, along with Ole and his coaching staff.

‘Our focus is on bringing in a combination of experience and the best young players with potential to develop further, fusing graduates from our Academy with high-quality acquisitions.

‘It is important to note that the commercial elements of the club are geared to ensuring we have a self-sustaining model which supports investment in the playing side.’
