Even when he’s not on his own tour, Ed Sheeran is no stranger to popping up for a surprise gig, and fans in Japan got just that when he hopped on stage to join ONE OK ROCK.
Ed, 28, has been friends with the Japanese rock band since he took the boys out during his South East Asia tour earlier in the year, and as he was in town, he decided to join them as a surprise guest during their show.
ONE OK ROCK and Ed have also written songs and done a studio session together in the past few months, so he was never going to be in Yokohama and not hang out with his friends.
According to fans who were lucky enough to witness the impromptu collaboration in person, Ed sang ONE OK ROCK’s Wherever You Are and his own Shape Of You with the band.
Ed also told his Instagram followers: ‘@oneokrockofficial love you guys, amazing show!’ and ‘@10969taka pleasure sharing the stage with you man, you’re the best x’.
ONE OK ROCK frontman Taka Moriuchi told Rock Sound earlier this year that the band and Ed worked on music together: ‘We actually did two songs. He wrote lyrics and we made the melody together.
‘He’s crazy – in four – five hours he made two songs. It’s crazy, so fast… I think you’re gonna love it but I don’t know when’s the release. It was just a session.’
He added: ‘[Ed] wants to sing in Japanese, so I’m trying to put some Japanese words on the songs. And after, if he wants to try and sing in Japanese, we can share the song. But I don’t know, we’ll see what happens.’
There’s no news on when or if the collaboration will be released but by the sounds of it, we may well get to hear Ed singing in Japanese before too long.
