Ed Sheeran is currently enjoying being a hands-on dad to his first daughter, but her all-important first word remains a bit of a mystery – even to him.

The Bad Habits hitmaker – who has 15-month-old Lyra with wife Cherry Seaborn – says he’s delighted to see how his little girl is growing and although sweetly, the tot’s first word was likely ‘Dad,’ he explained that he thinks she doesn’t quite realise she was calling out for him.

Speaking on the MTV EMAs red carpet in Hungary on Sunday, the songwriter happily gushed about how well the newest member of his family was doing, adding that he had a night off parenting duties as his one-year-old was with her grandparents.

‘She’s great! She’s walking, she’s talking,’ he told Entertainment Tonight. ‘She’s at my parents’ at the moment and having a good time.’

Speaking about the joys of fatherhood and of her first word, he maintained it was a hard one to pin down.

He said: ‘You see, I’m not sure. Because been saying “dad” for a while, but pointing at random s***. So yeah, I’m not sure.’

Prior to the awards show, the megastar, 30, said he was thrilled to be at the event and nominated at all, even if he walked away with no awards on the night.

‘Whatever happens, happens. I love being at these things, I love performing at these things. If I don’t walk away with anything, it’s all good.’

For the record, he walked away from the EMAs with two trophies, best artist and best song for Bad Habits – not too shabby at all.

Previously, Ed publicly spoke about his thoughts on whether to give up music when his daughter was born.

Speaking on SiriusXM, the star said: ‘In my year off, I was kind of searching for who I was because I stopped playing music for a bit. And music is entirely me as a person.’

‘And then I had my daughter — well, my wife had our daughter, but I’m a parent. And then I was like, that’s it, this is me.’

‘I’m just going to be a dad, I’m not going to play music anymore.

‘I think it’s more important for my daughter to grow up knowing that her parents love creating and enjoy their jobs, and seeing that rather than looking at your dad as technically unemployed.’

Thankfully, the thoughts didn’t stick and he released his acclaimed new album = in October.

Before the EMAs wrapped up, he also spoke of his friendship of a decade with fellow singer-songwriter megastar Taylor Swift and had nothing but praise for her.

‘She’s a very, very good friend of mine. I’ve known her about 10 years and it’s just nice to have someone in the music industry who goes to the same sort of things.’

‘We’re both the same age, we both write songs from our heart, and yeah, it’s a pleasure knowing her.’

When asked about the rumours Taylor is set to feature on a remix of his track The Joker and the Queen, he refused to confirm or deny anything: ‘You know what? It’s nice to have surprises in life.’
