easyJet: Package holiday relaunch to fill Thomas Cook gap & boost budget options

easyJet has announced the relaunch of its package holiday offering in the wake of Thomas Cook’s collapse. It is thought that the new offering will provide low-cost options for travellers hoping to jet off to destinations around the globe. The new holidays are set to launch before Christmas.

George Charles a spokesperson for www.MoneySavingHeroes.co.uk, added: “Since the demise of Thomas Cook there is now a huge gap in the market for package holidays; if this substantial gap can be replaced by a budget option it’ll be happy days for those wanting to get away on the cheap.

“This will be disconcerting news for the airlines that offer premium options, like TUI and Virgin because they will now have two budget airlines to compete with; Jet2 and EasyJet.

“Overall however, this is a positive announcement for the travel industry and could help in resurrecting a failing sector.

“Time will tell if this can give the travel sector the boost it so desperately needs but I would say this is a good reason to be optimistic about the future, even with the threat of Brexit still looming.”

However, Alana Gomez, spokesperson for flight-comparison site www.jetcost.co.uk, believes this a gap that no longer needs to be filled.

She said: “It is certainly a brave move by easyJet to relaunch its package holiday business to fill the gap left by Thomas Cook, because arguably it is a gap that no longer needs to be filled.

“One of the major issues that Thomas Cook faced before its demise was the fact that it failed to move with the times, and package holidays aren’t as in-demand as they used to be; consumers often prefer to book individual legs of their journey themselves, as it can end up cheaper. What’s more, Thomas Cook were known to have spread themselves too thin.

“EasyJet’s stature as one of the most reliable and cost-effective airlines may well be enough to see them succeed in the market, but it’s a move that raises more questions than it does solve answers, and vying to fill the gap left by Thomas Cook certainly gives easyJet big boots to fill – especially with Hays Travel having come in and purchased a lot of Thomas Cook’s stores. “The company has also announced that it wants to become the world’s first major net zero carbon airline, and this at least is a hugely positive move by easyJet.”

The news follows the announcement of a budget-friendly sale on flights for Britons looking to jet off on holiday in Autumn of next year.

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis urged holidaymakers to jump on the deal as soon as possible.

Prices on offer were as low as £30.99 for destinations including Santiago de Compostela, Tivat and Jerez de la Frontera

Meanwhile, for just £2 more travellers can experience the sights of Naples, Dussledorf, Verona, Krakow and Amsterdam.

Flights to Budapest, Barcelona, Faro and Malta, amongst other beautiful destinations, are also available for £34.99 so won’t break the bank.

Adventurous tourists hoping to head a little further are also in luck, with the airline boasting an impressive global offering to destinations such as Reykjavík in Iceland, Marrakech in Morocco and Hurghada in Egypt for £38.99, £41.99 and 170.99 respectively.

However, easyJet operates on the basis of supply and demand.

Flights went live on the company website on 7 November, meaning many flights may have seen an increase as seats were filled.
