easyJet accused of ‘daylight robbery’ by FURIOUS Liverpool fans over Madrid flight prices

Flight fares are a sore point for some UK travellers looking to venture to Madrid next month – with many accusing budget airlines of “daylight robbery”. The angst comes particularly from Liverpool Football Club’s fans, whose elation at their side reaching the Champions League Final in Madrid on June 1 quickly turned to frustration when they learned how tricky it was to get there. Usually, they may have relied on budget airlines such as easyJet to take them to the Med. Yet some claim the firm has increased its fares by”683 per cent” in a whopping hike which has left many priced out.

Many have taken to Twitter to express their sheer fury, with one writing: “@easyJet hiking up prices by 683 per cent for return flights to Madrid is quite simply profiteering from the passion of football fans. This is nothing new but entirely shameful.”

Another quipped: “Hi @easyJet I’d like to report a robbery,” before they added: “Well Margaret, could you please explain why easyJet think it’s ok to charge hardworking LFC fans this much to get to Madrid?”

One then raged: “@easyJet can you seriously justify the 600 per cent + price rise of flights to Madrid on June 1st ? Greed.”

One LFC fan added: “easyJet have put the flights up flying from London to Madrid for the Champions League final from approx £450 last night to approx £1,200 now.”

Yet when Express.co.uk quizzed easyJet about the change, they said it was all in compliance with their pricing structure – something implemented on every flight.

A spokesperson for easyJet said: “As with all airlines, our pricing is demand-led, which means that as more seats are booked on a flight the price will rise so our fares start low and increase the closer it is to the date of departure.”

“We do not artificially increase ticket prices around sporting events, prices are led by a strong demand for some flights due to convenient scheduled flight times.

“We believe our fares remain competitive in comparison to other airlines flying around the same time.”

Some footie mad fans fear if Tottenham Hotspur also progress to the final this evening, flight prices will soar higher.

Meanwhile, in order to help fans make it to the big match, Express.co.uk has revealed how they can get to Spain on the cheap.

Kiwi.com have been keen to assemble affordable prices and routes for fans looking to travel to the Wanda Metropolitano.

The first option to Madrid comes via Switzerland and Belgium and does involve a five night stay in the city.

While your accommodation costs may bump up the overall price of the trip, it offers a good chance to explore attractions like the Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol.

The return leg comes via Milan, with just under a four hour layover, but it will save you hundreds of pounds.

Secondly, if you fancy a trip to Romania there is time for a quick nap before heading to Madrid.

Again, this route returns to England via Milan.
