EastEnders' Tony Clay admits Callum 'unravels' ahead of 'suspenseful' wedding

EastEnders actor Tony Clay has confessed there is plenty of drama and suspense coming on the soap as the Callum and Whitney wedding approaches.

Next week, viewers will watch as Callum (Tony Clay) and Whitney (Shona McGarty) prepare to head down the aisle, with the week’s episodes depicting just one day.

The week climaxes with a gunshot echoing around Albert Square, while an as yet unknown resident’s life hanging in the balance.

Today, Tony appeared on Lorraine to talk to stand-in host Christine Lampard all about the impending chaos that fans can expect – though he kept all the juiciest details secret.

He told Lorraine Kelly’s replacement: “Next week is all the build up. There’s a lot of drama as you’d expect in an EastEnders wedding.

“There’s a lot going on – we see a lot of Callum struggling with what’s going on. I think it’s something he thought he could push away, and now the big day is getting there and you see it unravel throughout the week.”

Callum has been struggling to come to terms with his sexuality, being in love with Whitney but having a secret affair with Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden).

EastEnders spoilers confirmed that Callum will come clean about his fling with Ben, but Tony stayed quiet on whether the wedding will still happen.

He teased: “I think for the viewers, this week and next there’s so much that goes on.

“I’ve seen the episodes and they’re really, really great. It’s really special and lovely to be a part of as well.”

Callum – formerly known as Halfway – has gone through a serious journey since he arrived in Albert Square, and a sexuality struggle wasn’t even on the cards when he was introduced

However Tony had a chat with big boss Kate Oates, who suggested the storyline to Tony, who admitted everything “clicked”.

He explained: “The bosses and everyone are always hearing what the fans say and it’s important.

“But when I had that chat with Kate there were layers to this character and the sexuality element clicked.

“He’s a boy that comes from a fairly broken home, a dad that put him down, he’s never really fit, he was in the army and he’s thinking, ‘Where’s my place?'”

And while Tony “couldn’t possibly say” who will end up on the receiving end of a bullet, he certainly did enough to get fans desperate to tune in.

He finished: “It’s an EastEnders wedding – lots of drama, lots of suspense. We’ve got Patsy coming back as Bianca – that was special.”

Lorraine airs weekdays at 8.30am on ITV.
