Speaking after filming her exit scenes, Lacey said: “Well we’ll just have to see how Ben’s plan plays out, poor Keanu.

“Stacey and Martin are planning to lay low and let the dust settle but I’m sure they’ll be in cahoots with the Slaters for updates.

“For now, Walford isn’t safe for any of them so they had to vanish.”

In tonight’s episode fans were left crying at Stacey’s emotional exit.

The episode began with Stacey telling Kush, who is dad to her son Arthur, that she was taking the kids away for a little while to look after her brother Sean in hospital.

But Kush wasn’t having it, insisting that being around a drug addict was no place for kids.

Realising that she couldn’t take Arthur away from his dad, Stacey told Martin that she thought the best thing to do was leave the little lad with his father, while they take Lily and Hope on the run with them.

In emotionally-charged scenes, Stacey then said a heartbreaking goodbye to her son as her family watched on.

Tracing a heart on the youngsters hand with her finger, she told him: “You see, that’s mummy’s heart that I have just drawn, so if you miss me, you can just press it and it will be like I am here.”

As Jean and Martin looked on and fought back tears, it wasn’t long before Stacey broke down too.

And viewers at home were equally a mess, flocking to twitter to share their distress.

One wrote: “Oh Stacey Slater Ice Skater you’re breaking my heart here. I don’t want our Queen to leave #EastEnders”

But the tears didn’t stop there, as Stacey still had to say a wrenching farewell to her sick mum, Jean, who is soon to undergo an operation for her ovarian cancer.

“What if something happens and I’m not here?” said a distraught Stacey, as her mum did her best to reassure her that she had to put herself and the kids first.

And with the police closing in as DCI Marshall did the rounds on the Square asking people questions about the attack on Phil, Stacey and Martin realised they had to get out while they still good.

Stacey’s final scene came as she and Martin rode out of Walford in the back of a black cab as Kush looked on, holding Arthur in his arms.

Unable to take the strain, Stacey sobbed and pressed her hand to the car window, not knowing when she will next see her son.

The storyline was engineered so Lacey could go on maternity leave to have her first child with husband Matt Kay.

These scenes were filmed several weeks ago, as on 12 July, Lacey welcomed daughter Dusty Violet Kay into the world.
