EastEnders slumps to worst ever ratings due to Women’s World Cup switch

The BBC One soap attracted just 2.9million viewers for its 9pm episode on Tuesday.

It was the first time in its 34-year history that the audience has dipped beneath 3m. Viewers blasted Beeb bosses for moving the show to fit in with Fifa Women’s World Cup fixtures.

One fan wrote: “The Beeb is killing EE.” Another said: “Unfortunately it’s had it. It’s so far removed from what it once was it’s like a completely different show.”

The Beeb was forced to air the episode intended for last night in the later slot on Tuesday after the England clash with Norway was scheduled for last night.

A BBC spokeswoman said: “With the growing popularity of this year’s Women’s World Cup, it was decided BBC One viewers should have the opportunity to watch as many of the matches as possible.”
