Eamonn Holmes took aim at online trolls today on This Morning in the wake of the death of Caroline Flack.

The Love Island presenter died by suicide on Saturday, weeks before she was due to face trial after being charged with assault following a row with her boyfriend, Lewis Burton. She had denied the charge.

Eamonn and his wife Ruth Langsford were discussing the debate about online trolling when the 60-year-old made an impassioned speech about his disgust at the trolls on social media.

Ruth and guest Lucy Alexander took the view that it was best to deal with the start of social media bullying in schools, but her husband clearly disagreed, and called out the adults who trolled public figures on social media sites.

‘A lot of these people are adults,’ he fumed. ‘When I look at their profiles, “I’m Jim, a caring father of two…my family is my life.”

‘But Jim, you’re also stupid.’

Eamonn continued: ‘Life is tough but it’s also tougher when you’re stupid.

‘It just amazes me, these people and their profiles. Why do they think they need to do this?’

This debate comes as yesterday Ruth visibly broke down during a discussion about suicide live on air.

Ruth lost her sister Julia Johnson to suicide last June. An inquest later ruled that she had taken her own life after battling depression for years.

Tributes have continued to pour in for Caroline after her sad passing on the weekend.

Radio 1 DJ and close friend Nick Grimshaw dedicated a very special song on his drivetime show for the presenter. who he named ‘one of my favourite people.’

Last night’s edition of Love Island also featured a heartbreaking tribute to Caroline by the show’s narrator, Iain Stirling.

This Morning continues weekdays from 10am on ITV.
