Eamonn Holmes praises wife Ruth Langsford as his 'hero' in emotional birthday tribute

This Morning star Eamonn Holmes has paid an emotional tribute to his wife and co-host Ruth Langsford on her 60th birthday.

The TV star praised his wife as his “hero” and admitted he was “not half the person she is”.

Husband and wife were speaking to Hello! magazine as Ruth celebrated turning 60.

Eamonn, also 60, told the magazine: “Ruth has a lovely attitude to life. I just stand back in awe and look at her strength and capabilities.

“She is an amazing person – I am not half the person she is.

“She is my great hero and she has got more into her groove as she has got older.”

The pair met through a mutual friend in 1997 and married in 2010.

They have one son together, Alexander, but Eamonn has three other children from his first marriage.

Speaking about turning 60, Ruth told Hello! she was excited about hitting the mark and revealed she was surprised to still be working.

She said: “I can’t quite believe I have reached the big 6-0 because when you are in your 20s, you think it’s really old.

“But actually I am quite excited about it.

Ruth said she was happy to reach the marker but admitted that at one time she did not think she would still be working

“I am very happy in my life, I have got a very happy marriage, a lovely family, I love my work and my career, so everything is going really well.”

Ruth’s TV career started around 30 years ago as a continuity announcer and evening news presenter for ITV regional station Television South West, before she moved into national TV.

She came to national prominence as a panellist on Loose women from 1999 to 2002 and in 2000 took on her most famous role on This Morning.

Of her lengthy career, she said: “I didn’t think I would still be working in television at 60 because when I was in my 30s you didn’t see 60-year-old women in television.

“Women were farmed off when they hit 40 – but it’s very different now and that’s thanks to those who forged the way for older women; people like Gloria Hunniford and Janet Street-Porter.”
