Eamonn Holmes is keeping positive ahead of Christmas, but admits this year will be harder than most as his family commemorates the heartbreaking loss of wife Ruth Langsford’s sister.

The This Morning husband-and-wife duo were left devastated in June this year when Julia Johnson died after a ‘long illness’

Ruth, who has never been shy of her love of the festive period, and husband Eamonn are used to bringing cheer to our TV screens, with previous years seeing Eamonn dub his wife of nine years the ‘Queen of Christmas’.

But this year will be a quiter affair, as they continue to grieve the loss of Julia.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Eamonn said: ‘Christmas will be a difficult time.

‘I know we will both be reflective, whilst bearing in mind we have responsibilities to carry on for other people around us.’

‘Our memories will be dominated with the loss of Ruth’s sister Julia,’ he added of his thoughts of 2019 as a whole. ‘That’s what we will remember most of all.’

An inquest in November ruled Julia’s death a suicide, after a battle with depression.

While the pair, especially Ruth, have been undoubtedly affected by the loss, landmark moments such as Eamonn’s birthday has kept the couple’s spirits up – especially after a series of surprises and treats from friends and family determined to bring light to the pair’s lives.

‘What we would like to remember is a magnificent week of surprise celebrations I had served up to me for my 60th birthday in December,’ he added.

‘In fact, I’m all surprised out, but I’m very grateful to everyone who played their part in a birthday I initially simply wanted to forget.’

In order to get into the spirit of Christmas, Eamonn has teamed up with Absolut Vodka for their Absolut Crackers Christmas – getting into the spirit with Drag Race’s Baga Chipz and Daisy Lowe for a festive shoot where he takes centre stage as the party’s cook.

On what he, Ruth and son Jack have planned for Christmas, Eamonn told us: ‘I am the sort of person that has got to watch a handful of classic seasonal movies to put me in the mood.

‘So, I will be seeking out the tried and tested perennials like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and It’s a Wonderful Life.’

‘On the TV front it’s going to take a lot to top the anticipation we are all feeling towards the Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special!,’ he added.
