Dwayne Wade opens up about telling his wife Gabrielle Union that he’d fathered another woman’s child during their split in their new ESPN documentary.

The NBA legend had a son, Xavier, with Aja Metoyerin in 2013 while the couple was estranged and claims that telling the Bring It On actress was the ‘hardest thing’ he ever had to do.

‘I had a child with someone else and I had to tell her,’ Dwayne says in the upcoming film D. Wade: Life Unexpected. ‘Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do is man up and tell Gabrielle Union that I’ve had a child with somebody else. I couldn’t sleep. I wasn’t eating.’

According to ET, he continues: ‘When you hold something in that you know is going to come out and you have this information and you know it’s gonna f**k somebody’s life up, that you care about, that you love, if it don’t hurt you, then you’re not human.

‘Me and Gab just went through something that you never want to go through and we still came out of it.’

Dwayne, who is also the father to Zaire, 18, Zaya, 12, and is the guardian of his nephew Dahveon, 18, later wed Gabbie in 2014 and the couple welcomed daughter Kaavia through a surrogate back in 2018 after ‘eight or nine miscarriages’.

Gabrielle detailed her ongoing struggle to conceive in her autobiography, We’re Going to Need More Wine, writing: ‘I have had eight or nine miscarriages. For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant — I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.’

The upcoming documentary D. Wade: Life Unexpected, set to premiere later this month, features never-seen-before home movies and delves into his professional and personal victories and setbacks.

‘I’m excited to share a side of myself with the world that not many people may know,’ Dwayne said of the project.

‘This deeply personal documentary will give fans a never-before seen look not only at the behind-the-scenes of my 16-year career in the NBA, but will peel back the curtain on my personal life – the highs, the lows and everything in between –  showing how I created my own path to get to where I am today.’

D. Wade: Life Unexpected airs Sunday 23 February at 9pm on E.T in the US.
