Dune: The Sisterhood – plot, news and more on Denis Villeneuve's spinoff series

WarnerMedia has decided to press forward with another fantasy TV series for its streaming service, HBO Max. The new project should tell you how excited people are for Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune film(s) as it’s set to explore more of Frank Herbert’s world.

Dune: The Sisterhood, a series following mainly female characters in central roles, has been given a full series order, so you can rest assured that this thing is definitely happening. Villeneuve will helm the pilot, which was at one point being written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). Spaihts was also in place to be the series’ showrunner – until this week.

THR confirms that Spaihts has been removed from the position, as “Legendary TV was not happy with the early work Spaihts submitted and opted to remove him as showrunner on the production so he can instead focus on the yet-to-be-formally-announced film sequel to the forthcoming Dune feature.” A new showrunner has yet to be appointed.

Here’s everything else we know about The Sisterhood…

Dune: The Sisterhood plot – ladies first

Here’s a synopsis of the forthcoming series, per THR:

Herbert’s Dune novel examines a future in which humanity has spread across the galaxy to thousands of worlds, all ruled by the Padishah Emperor, The Imperium. Dune: The Sisterhood takes place in the same universe and explores the future through the eyes of a mysterious order of women: the Bene Gesserit. Given abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis — known to its inhabitants as Dune.

“The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me. Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series,” Villeneuve said in a statement.

There have been a couple of Dune TV adaptations in the past – one in 2000 starring William Hurt, and a sequel series of sorts starring James McAvoy in 2003.

Villeneuve started production on his first Dune film back in March with an all-star cast that includes Timothee Chalamet, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Zendaya and Oscar Isaac. It’s set for release next December.

Dune: The Sisterhood release date – in the wind

There’s no official air date for this spin-off yet, and it may not even arrive in 2020, but we’ll bring you more on the new series as it arrives.
