Dubai trains team of Covid-detecting dogs for airport work

First Lieutenant Nasser al-Falasi, of Dubai Police, said the team which includes German Shepherds, Labradors, Cocker Spaniels and Border Collies can carry out around 40 tests a day.

Other countries including France and Finland have already used dogs to detect Covid and this week the US started a trial with two dogs at Miami.

Medical detection dogs can smell metabolic changes to people’s breath and sweat caused by the disease, and have been said to be more accurate than lateral flow tests.

It can take just two weeks for some breeds to pick up the scent.
