Dubai’s government has denied claims by R Kelly he had plans to perform and meet their royal family.

The disgraced singer had asked a judge for permission to travel to the United Arab Emirates to fulfill work duties, as he faces numerous charges for sexual abuse.

However the city official has refuted the 52-year-old had concerts lined up and rejected he had an invitation to meet the ruling Al-Maktoum family.

In a statement, Dubai’s government said: ‘Authorities in Dubai have not received any request for a performance by singer R Kelly nor are there any venues that have been booked.’

It added he ‘has not been invited by the Dubai royal family for a performance’.

Kelly’s lawyer Steven Greenberg has since responded claiming the singer had signed a contract with a ‘legitimate promoter’, and clarified that it stated he would be ‘available’, not invited, to meet the royal family.

Kelly faces 10 charges of sexual abuse against four victims, three of which were minors at the time. He denies all accusations.

He was previously arrested and detained in custody after failing to pay child support for the three kids he shares with ex-wife Andrea Kelly – Jay, Joann and Robert Kelly Jr – allegedly owning more than eight months of fees.

He was released earlier this month after the amount he owed, $161,000 (£122,000), was paid by an unknown person.

Kelly then requested a judge grant him permission to travel to the UAE despite handing in his passport.

The documents filed at Cook County Circuit Court read: ‘Before he was arrested Mr Kelly had signed a contract to perform between three to five shows in Dubai, UAE, in April 2019.

‘He requests permission to travel to Dubai for the shows. While there he is supposed to meet with the royal family.

‘He cannot work, and consequently cannot make a living if he is confined to Illinois, or even the United States.

‘Denying him the opportunity to work would be a hardship on his children.’
