WHAT’S IT LIKE? A family-owned seaside escape with all the luxury of a 5* hotel and no snobby reception staff.
The themed rooms with private outdoor spaces make it unlike any other beach stay. Each room has a hot tub for you to kick back and listen to the waves.
ROOM ANY GOOD? Our Garden Spa Room was themed like a Moroccan beach hut.
With a superking bed, power shower and huge outdoor space with three seating areas, an outdoor log burner and hot tub, it feels like our own private sanctuary.

EAT THERE OR GRAB A PIZZA? They don’t serve dinner but the breakfast offering is so good, it would be silly to go elsewhere. Order the night before.
I had scrambled eggs on toast with chorizo. My partner had a warm croissant with jam made locally.
Choose where to eat it – we had ours outside in our courtyard and had it served to our table, meaning no awkward chat with other guests over your morning brew.
They also offered full English and lots of veggie options, so there was plenty of choice.
WHAT ELSE? Sited a little out of Whitstable town centre, you really feel like you have escaped. Take a beautiful scenic walk along the seafront into Whitstable, filled with quirky shops and oysters bars, ice cream parlours and the English seaside.
Driftwood’s hosts are very knowledgeable and can recommend a range of restaurants depending on your taste.
Owner Jez sent us to his favourite fish and chip shop, which really lived up to expectations.

SO YOU’D GO BACK? Absolutely. Partly to try out the other rooms, as they are all different.
And partly to feel like I’m back in the lap of luxury in my own private hot tub, wondering why I don’t install one of these in my own home . . .
