Drew Goddard is first major signing for Fox TV under Disney

Drew Goddard will likely not be short of a penny or two for the next four years. According to Deadline, he’s the first person to secure a major overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV in its new home at Disney. Cash, it appears, is no longer a problem when it comes to the new TV talent pool, although the deal has reportedly been in the works for weeks.

Goddard, whose big screen efforts include 2011’s The Cabin In The Woods and last year’s Bad Times At The El Royale, has been working in TV for ages. He started his career on Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel, before moving onto J.J. Abrams’ Alias and writing smash hit found footage monster movie Cloverfield for Abrams’ production company Bad Robot. He later created flagship Marvel series Daredevil at Netflix, recently cancelled in a huge Marvel purge by the streaming service as Disney readies it’s own platform, Disney+.

The new deal is apparently worth between $50-70 million, and Goddard is set to “write, create, direct and develop new television projects for the studio for all platforms” under it.

“We have wanted to be in business with Drew since the day his work on our series Angel was over. That was in 2004,” said Dana Walden, Chairman of Disney Television Studios and ABC Entertainment, in a statement. “Having a new deal with him after all of this time makes me unspeakably happy. As a writer and director, he’s a 10; as a collaborator and magnet for other incredible writers, directors and actors, he is off the charts. Our goal is to support Drew as he builds his own spectacular production company inside of the Disney Television Studios.”

Goddard added “I am thrilled to be working so closely with Dana and her team. My relationship with Dana stretches back to the beginning when I first started at Buffy. Since then, I have had the privilege of working with Disney and Fox for the majority of my career in television, and I look forward to continuing those relationships over the next few years.”

We are looking forward to seeing what Goddard does at Fox-Disney (Fisney? Dox?) too. More big announcements are sure to come, and there’s one in particular we’ve got our eye on – Goddard has been linked to the proposed X-Force movie for quite some time. With Deadpool now at Disney, the cogs may be turning faster on that project behind the scenes…
