Drew Barrymore explains why she'll 'never' get married again

Drew Barrymore has revealed she plans to never get married again, despite considering herself a “hopeless romantic”.

The 50 First Dates star opened up about her love life in an interview with People, where she said she would be discussing relationships on her new talk show The Drew Barrymore Show, premiering 14 September.

“I am a hopeless romantic, and everybody on this planet needs love in some form,” Barrymore said. “And we are constantly contending with relationships. Love and those relationships may look differently for people. But it’s there at its core. So, I can’t help but want to explore and examine that.”

While she’s open to love, Barrymore, who has been married three times, to Jeremy Thomas from 1994 to 1995, to Tom Green from 2001 to 2002 and to Will Kopelman from 2012 to 2016, is adamant that she won’t ever get married again.

“Never. Never, never, never. I will never get married again!” she told the outlet. “And I also believe people should not say the word ‘never,’ and I will never, with a capital N-E-V-E-R, never get married.”

According to the actress, she feels she has two options – stop getting married or “be Elizabeth Taylor,” who married eight times.

“I never want to be entwined with someone like that again ever. You break up, and you move on. You get divorced, and it’s just so different,” she continued. “I love that we are trying to hold on to an institution that [started] when the closest person to you for companionship was a three-day horse ride away and your life span was 30 years.”

But despite her strong feelings on marriage, the actress, who shares daughters with Olive, seven, and Frankie, six, with Kopelman, said she is open to dating, despite not actively “seeking” it.

“It doesn’t mean that maybe I wouldn’t like to meet someone, especially when my kids go off to college,” she said. “Or a year from now, I could be totally in love. I’m open to it; I’m not seeking it. My cup runneth over. I have so much love in my life.”

If she does enter into another relationship, it likely won’t be after having met through online dating, however, as the 45-year-old said she’s tried it but “a lot of people totally ghosted me.”

“And one time I was waiting to go on a date, and at the time we were supposed to meet he just wrote: ‘Yeah, I can’t,’” she recalled, adding: “But I’d rather hang out with my friends.”
