  • DreamHack has agreed to continue holding festivals at the Elmia venue in Jönköping, Sweden, through 2022.
  • The company hosts its annual DreamHack Summer and Winter events at Elmia, and held its first DreamHack festival there in 2002.
  • DreamHack Winter in November will serve as the company’s 25th-anniversary celebration.

DreamHack will continue to host its gaming and esports events at the city-owned Elmia venue in Jönköping, Sweden, through 2022, the company announced today.

Elmia is where the first DreamHack festival was hosted in 2002, and the company continues to host its annual DreamHack Summer and DreamHack Winter festivals there. Both events will continue on at the venue through 2022 with this new extension agreement.

“It feels great to have come to an agreement with Elmia, ensuring that DreamHack Summer and DreamHack Winter festivals stay where they belong over the coming years,” said DreamHack co-CEO Marcus Lindmark, in a release. “The people of Elmia, and all of Jönköping, have always been great partners, welcoming gamers from all over the world to their city and supporting us as best they can, in whatever way they can.”

DreamHack’s release notes that Jönköping is the smallest city to host DreamHack festivals, although the events have a long legacy there. DreamHack will celebrate its 25th anniversary as a company at DreamHack Winter from Nov. 28-Dec. 1, and the festival will also include a competition in Nintendo’s newly-announced Super Smash Bros. Ultimate European Circuit.

“Now that we’ve secured at least six more DreamHack festivals at Elmia, we can continue to focus on the rapid development and proliferation of esports, while also bringing value to other parties and events at Elmia,” said Elmia CEO Lotta Frenssen, in a release.

“The security that Jönköping represents for parents is an important reason for DreamHack’s choice of city and arena—because there are parents who, perhaps for the first time, are letting their children leave home to spend a few days sharing their interest and passion for esports with peers,” she added. “Furthermore, Elmia’s premises, including future development work, constitutes a very important parameter for DreamHack’s choice of location.”
