Drake swaps stadiums for Leicester nightclub to make up for cancelling 2017 gig

It costs at least £69 to see superstar rapper Drake in concert on his UK tour. Unless you live in Leicester, that is.

The Hotline Bling hitmaker performed at Club Republic in the city centre – a nightclub with a capacity of 2,000. That’s much smaller than the 16,000-strong stadium audiences he’s used to.

Drake made the stop after his Birmingham show, appearing on the club’s small stage at around 1:20 am.

Making the night his official after party, Drizzy performed a slew of his recent hits including God’s Plan, Nonstop and Sicko Mode, which reached number 1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-hop charts.

Drake was last due to perform in at Club Republic in 2017, before cancelling without an explanation.

However, pictures later suggested that he ducked out of the after party in favour of a shop at the Co-op in Walsall instead.

Luckily for those who had bought tickets this time around, the rapper made good on his promise this time and appeared at the same club he had swerved years earlier.

Tickets for the cancelled event ranged from £40 to £1,000 for a table, while attendees at the club who actually saw Drake paid just £20.

The after party was organised by Sukh Singh, who owns events group The Project UK. ‘It was just packed in there, it was great – the atmosphere was amazing. It’s something that’s going to be heard about here for a long time,’ Singh told LeicesterLive.

‘Drake left Birmingham at around 11.30pm, he arrived in Leicester at about 20 past 1 and he performed here. It was non-stop for about 7 songs. It was legendary, that room was crazy.’

The In My Feelings singer is currently visiting Europe on his Assassination Vacation tour, and is taking the opportunity to spend more time with his son, Adonis. The one-year-old, who lives with his mother Sophie Brussaux in France, was reportedly side of stage when Drake opened the European leg of his tour in Manchester earlier this year.

A source told Hollywood Life: ‘She’s flown with Adonis all the way to LA before to see Drake so meeting up with him in the UK was no issue at all.

‘Drake pays for all her travel of course, he always does. He is always very hospitable to Sophie, but since he’s in Europe, he is making extra effort to see his son.’
