Dr Ranj had suicidal thoughts before he came out as gay more than 10 years ago.

At the time he was married to his long term partner Sulvinder Samra, however, the star decided to call things off with his wife once making peace with his own sexuality.

Talking about his journey of acceptance, the 40-year-old opened up on his dark thoughts and how he was left wanting to take his own life.

The This Morning star told the Sunday Mirror: ‘I was truly broken. I felt like I was a really bad, horrible person just for being true to myself.

‘In times like that, you have really dark thoughts and I did have times when I thought it would be easier not to be here.’

After walking away from his marriage, the doctor spoke about how he was forced to put himself back together, with help from his friends.

He confessed: ‘I never thought my family would be as accepting as they are. [They are] the most loving and supportive people I know.’

Sulvinder’s father, Jemera, has since spoken out where he revealed he is still affected by the ordeal.

Talking to the Mail Online, Dr Ranj’s former father-in-law said he still has ‘painful memories’ from that time of his life.

However, the star has since addressed Jemera’s interview where he told his Twitter followers how heartbreaking of a time it was.

He said: ‘Today, a newspaper has published details of a very difficult time in my life, which happened 10 years ago.

‘All I would like to say is that the process of realising who you are, and being able to be your truest self, is different for everyone and often not easy.’

Dr Ranj continued: ‘My realisation happened later in life and was heartbreaking for all involved.

‘Luckily, I had the support of great friends and family, but not everyone has that which is why I have shared my story before in the hope that it may help others.

‘I have nothing but respect for my ex-wife and her family, whom I was very close to, and wish them all the very best for the future.’

Ranj and Sulvinder tied the knot in 2006 and had a traditional Sikh ceremony.

The TV star has been open about their failed union in the past and previously stated that while he did love Sulvinder, he felt pressured into getting married.
