Dr Alex George has confirmed that he and his girlfriend Amelia Bath have decided to split.

The Love Island star, who has been working on the NHS frontline in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, confirmed the news to fans on social media, stating that they will continue to remain friends.

‘Guys just want to let you know, Amelia and I have decided to go our separate ways,’ he wrote on his Instagram story.

‘As you know, we’ve been apart for most of lockdown, which has been hard on us both and we both agree this is for the best.

‘We will remain good friends and I have nothing but respect for Amelia. Thank you for the love and support always.’

The two, who begun dating in late 2018, had only properly reunited just a few days ago after spending 102 days apart during the lockdown – although they did meet up at the end of May for a socially distanced picnic.

Alex previously revealed that he had been looking forward to taking his girlfriend out for dinner, as restaurants begin to open up again with the lockdown easing.

Sharing a throwback snap of the couple together on Instagram, he said: ‘Can’t wait to go for dinner with this one.

‘We have all waited so long to enjoy the simple things that make us happy in life. Well deserved by all.’

Back in April, Alex admitted finding it ‘tough’ isolating away from his partner during the pandemic.

Writing in the Daily Mail, he explained: ‘It’s a strange parallel – craving rest yet dreading time off – fuelled by the fact I’m now living, like so many medics, in isolation in the flat I’d normally be sharing with my girlfriend, Amelia.

‘And it’s all such a far cry from my Love Island experience, which is, of course, what made me famous. I went on the show in 2018, three years after leaving medical school.

‘I haven’t seen Amelia or any friends or family for four weeks now. Going home from a frantically busy and noisy A&E department to the silence of an empty flat is tough.

‘There’s no one to offload to; no opportunity to touch or be held.’
