Downton Abbey Takes the Top Spot, Ad Astra & Rambo Battle for 2nd

The Downton Abbey movie from Focus Features opened in first place this weekend with an estimated $31 million haul, giving Focus their highest opening of all time. Internationally the continuation of the hit TV series brought in $10 million for an international total of $30.8 million and a worldwide total of $61.8 million. With success like this, a sequel will no doubt be in the cards down the road.

New Regency and 20th Century Fox’s Ad Astra snuck ahead for second place with a $19.2 million domestic haul, internationally the sci-fi thriller flick brought in $26 million for a global opening of $45.2 million.  Directed by James Gray, Brad Pitt stars.

Lionsgate and Millennium Media’s Rambo: Last Blood debuted just below Ad Astra with an estimated $19.015 million domestic opening. When solid numbers arrive tomorrow though, the films could swap places. The film opened above the previous John Rambo movie (2008’s Rambo) which opened at $18.2 million unadjusted.

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s IT Chapter Two slipped from first to fourth place, a dramatic drop but considering the popularity of the three new releases, not unexpected. The sequel brought in  $17.25 million for a domestic total of $179.17 million, still down considerably from the original film in 2017 but the film is the #7 domestic release for the year. Internationally the sequel grossed  $21.3 million, crossing the $200 million mark at the interntional boxo ffice and pushing the film’s global total to $385.1 million.

Hustlers slipped into fifth place but dropped just 49% and brought in another $17 million in the US for a domestic total of $62.55 million. Produced on a budget of $20 million, the film will no doubt be one of the major success stories for the year. Written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, the film also stars Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, with Mercedes Ruehl and Cardi B. The film also stars an outstanding ensemble cast that includes Lizzo, Mette Towley, Madeline Brewer, and Trace Lysette.
