Dota 2 Surpasses 18M Hours Watched Thanks to The International: Top Twitch Content, August 12 – 18

Valve’s multiplayer online battle arena game Dota 2 saw a surge in viewership this past week during group stages for The International.

Meanwhile, Teamfight Tactics continues to experience declining viewership as League of Legends slowly regains hours watched week-over-week.

The following content is ranked according to the total number of hours watched on Twitch from Monday to the following Sunday, with data compiled using TEO Access.

Time to Shine

Dota 2 is used to playing second fiddle on Twitch as far as viewership goes compared to Riot Games’ multiplayer online battle arena game League of Legends, but around this time every year, that changes.

The International is one of the most-watched esports events every year, and though this past week was just the group stage of the tournament, it still managed to help the game generate 18.8M hours watched and produce three of this week’s top 10 channels.

Over the Rainbow

Rainbow Six: Siege is another game that’s typically outperformed in terms of hours watched on Twitch by other titles in its genre on a normal week, but this past week’s Raleigh Major gave the game viewership that it typical doesn’t receive.

Unlike some other titles, the growth of R6 esports has been slow and steady. While the title’s esports don’t attract the same level of attention as a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major. The Raleigh Major’s 2.8M hours watched on its main channel was paired with a 37K average concurrent viewership, peaking at 137K CCV.

Losing Fight?

Riot Game’s auto-battler Teamfight Tactics is down again, just after experiencing its first sub-10M hours watched week, and as TFT declines, the publisher’s more established title, League of Legends, is rising again.

It’s unclear how long this decline by TFT will continue, and where exactly the title will settle into the greater hierarchy of most-watched games on Twitch, but it’s repeatedly declining viewership brings it closer to potential competitors in the strategy-based gaming sphere like Blizzard Entertainment’s online card game Hearthstone, which had 5.3M hours watched this past week.
