From the makers of viral sensation Don’t F**k With Cats, Fear City: New York vs The Mafia proves to be your next Netflix must-watch.

Whilst DFWC detailed the actions of a group of rag-tag internet sleuths who ended up helping to solve a spate of killings by serial killer Luca Magnotta, Fear City promises to widen its lens to an entire city, and an investigation that lasted over two decades.

This time around, the focus will be the famous Mafia Commission Trial, held in the 1980s in New York. At the time a huge joint effort between local law inforcement and the FBI, the trial lasted nearly two years and included charges brought against NYC’s infamous ‘Five Families’ of organised gang heads.

Lastine from February 1985-November 1986, charges were lead by Rudolph ‘Rudy’ Giuliani, who most people will recognise now from his links to US President Donald Trump.

A synopsis for the new series reads: ‘In the 70s, New York was owned by the Mob. From the producers of Don’t F**k With Cats, comes the inside story of the rise and fall of New York’s most powerful Mafia families and the end of the golden era of the Mob.

‘With the full might of the FBI and an army of undercover agents, witness the bugging, the investigation, and the era-defining conclusion of the historic Mafia Commission Trial that changed everything.’

In the first-look trailer, we can see just how much organised crime was impacting New York in this time period, like an updated viewing of Scarface or The Godfather.

Composed of interviews with former gang members and law enforcement officers, we can glimpse quite clearly the sense of fear and dread that was gripping the city.

‘They had judges they put on the bench,’ one witness said. ‘They controlled restaurants, the docks, the ships, hospitals…’

A former mafia member added: ‘It was the golden era of the mob, the FBI couldn’t keep up with us.’

We already can’t wait to binge.

Fear City: New York vs The Mafia comes to Netflix this year.
